Tours

Throughout the winter time, many people come to my town in Mexico for vacation or for retirement. We have quite a few of them interested in the ministries going on with our church, so every Thursday there is a tour to some of the villages where we minister and also a chance to pass out food to the people working at the garbage dump. This week was my first time being on this tour, although we went to the garbage dump and passed out burgers when our team came for a week-long trip back in April. This time, it was a particularly good experience for me to hear even more about the ministry of the church, see some new neighborhoods, and hear lots of stories about how people have been helped through the ministry.

One of the stories that broke my heart was about a girl living in one of these villages. She had broken her leg several months before and was still having lots of pain in her knees. So, one of the missionaries took her to the doctor to get it checked out. It turned out that the pain was because she was so malnourished that she barely had any tendons and ligaments holding her knees together. There are so many other kids struggling with malnourishment just like her in a lot of these villages. It's so heartbreaking to know that these sweet children are suffering so much.

At the garbage dump, I got to spend some time trying out my Spanish with a couple of the people that work there. I think my Spanish was pretty bad, but they were great sports. We laughed a lot at my mistakes, which was really fun. One thing that got them really laughing hard, was when I tried to imitate a burro (donkey) to let them know that I understood what they were saying... Boy, did they laugh at that! It was fun to be able to make them smile. I know their job is so difficult, sorting through garbage all day in the heat, barely making any money for it. They do seem to keep a good sense of humor about them, which reminds me to be content in every circumstance. If they can do it, then I sure can!

Some pics from the tour before my camera punked out on me:
